Although during the 50s and 60s there was a revolution fought for freedom for all, it was different from the Civil War. The basis for the revolution had similar reasons, such as racism, to the Civil War. Racism played a role in both events but with different backgrounds. The similarities are outweighed by their differences.
One major difference is the rights that African Americans had at the two revolutions. During the Civil War African Americans were considered property and had zero rights. During the second revolution African Americans had more rights and could take things to court. There were several court cases brought up during this time to help fight for African American’s rights and equalities. This was never possible during the Civil War.
Another difference was who was fighting the revolutions. During the Civil War it was mainly the white men fighting the battles to protect their ways of life. During the revolution of the 50s and 60s the battle was between African Americans and southern citizens. This changed things drastically because African Americans were fighting for their own freedom instead of having the white man do it. They staged sit ins and in the movie they boycotted the bus system on a large scale.
A similarity between the two was the violence involved in both revolutions. During the Civil War and in the 50s and 60s violence toward African Americans was similar. Lynching and other similar tactics were used to harass the Africans Americans and scare them from battling against the way things were. Although Civil War was very different in scale compared to the 50s and 60s their tactics against African Americans at each time were similar.
With similarities and differences, both events were for the freedom and rights of African Americans. While one was a war and one was a collection of events they were both working for the same thing.
